After signing up to the challenge earlier on this year, it soon snuck up on us and we couldn’t have picked a better weekend – weather wise!
With all the gear, and no idea – we left the office on Friday at midday to begin the journey. We arrived in North Wales just in time for dinner (carb overload) to prepare us for the Welsh Three Peaks challenge the following morning.
With a 4am wake-up on the Saturday morning, we piled into the mini-bus all armed with sweet treats and litres of water, ready to begin our ascent up the first peak – Snowdon. We arrived in the car park at the bottom of the mountain to find it already full – so we had to park slightly further away, adding another 2k onto our walk (impressive, we know!)
We started our hike at 5am and made it to the Snowdon summit by 8am – stopping for short breaks to rehydrate, keep our sugar levels up and get some great shots of the incredible views! As we made our way back down, we soon realised that going down-hill was the harder part of the trek – but we were back down by 10.30am ready to refuel with a breakfast bap, which was well and truly deserved after an incline of 1,085m (3,560ft).
We then set off for an hour’s drive to the next mountain – Cadair Idris. Starting at 12.40pm – this mountain began with a very steep ascent which seemed like a never-ending staircase! The temperature had increased, and the sun was fully out. After being told Snowdon was the hardest hike, we thought this one would be a piece of cake… however, it’s safe to say we found it much tougher. But again, the views were worth it, and we made it to the top by 3pm and back down by 5pm.
We then set off for the last leg of the journey to Pen-Y-Fan, the drive was just under 3 hours which gave us the well-needed rest after the previous hike – ready to revitalise for the 3rd and final peak. We began this mountain at 8pm and made it to the top in record time of just under an hour – just in time for a spectacular sunset and victory picture at the summit! We then made it down in 45 mins, piled into the mini-bus by 10pm and made it back to the hotel just in time for last orders – result!!!
