Team Challenge: The Taskmaster Experience

Recently, we hosted a Taskmaster social event in honour of Torpedo’s 21st birthday, and it turned out to be an incredibly fun evening. Inspired by the popular UK television show, ‘Taskmaster’, where contestants complete a series of bizarre and often hilarious challenges, we brought the fun into our office and had an amazing time working together to complete the tasks.

On the day

The three little Alex Hornes, as played by the Social Committee, and our very own quick-witted Taskmaster, Rich P, waited for all the contestants to arrive in the conservatory where the antics would play out.

As in the TV show, our first task was the Prize Task:

Bring in something nostalgic from the year you were 21 years old.
Each person brought something in, supported by some hilarious stories and reasons for their choice. These were judged by our Taskmaster and points – and quips – were dished out.

This was followed by the main event – a series of wax-sealed tasks. The three teams took it in turns to read these out and compete for the most points. Some were timed tasks, others were ‘fastest wins’ in true Taskmaster style. Then, the Taskmaster had the power and joy to judge their efforts.

Some of the other tasks we ran were:

It’s our birthday!
Name the flavours in our curious cupcakes. Most accurate guesses win. You have 10 minutes. Your time starts…now.

Make us a gift.
Take an extraordinary photo of the most ordinary thing. You have 10 minutes. Your time starts…now.

Give us some good news.
Make the happiest headline using clippings from this newspaper. You have 5 minutes. Your time starts…now.

Dough not disappoint us.
Make the best ‘breadscape’ as a team. You have one slice of bread each. You can only use your mouth/teeth to shape the bread. You have 5 minutes. Your time starts…now.

Throughout the event, the atmosphere was light-hearted and full of laughter. Some tasks went hilariously wrong, while others showcased surprising ingenuity from our colleagues.

Our highlights?

Some incredible studio-quality shots for the ‘Make us a gift’ task:

And some amazing ‘breadscapes’:

The evening was wrapped up by announcing the winners, who received all the prizes and a small trophy to remind them of the evening – and their victory! Then we all enjoyed freshly cooked pizza, supplied by Select Flame!

What we learned

The Taskmaster event was not only fun but also a great reminder of how much creativity and innovation exists in our team. It brought out people’s competitive spirits in a playful way. Every task was completed with creative flare. Everyone got a chance to contribute, whether by coming up with solutions or simply bringing their sense of humour to the table.

As we tackled the weird and wonderful challenges together, we learned more about each other’s strengths, had shared moments of hilarity, and left feeling more connected as a team.

Happy 21st birthday Torpedo!
