The CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) runs the world’s largest environmental disclosure system. Your own business may well be one of the 23,000+ companies who report via CDP, globally, to disclose your environmental info – including your greenhouse gas emissions – to stakeholders.
Sustainability has long been on our list of priorities as a company, which meant we were very happy to hear that Torpedo’s 2024 CDP score for Climate is SME B – the highest achievable score for SMEs.
93% of companies listed in the FTSE 100 are more than happy to voluntarily disclose their activities in relation to climate change, water security and deforestation to the CDP. Many small companies are equally keen to show a commitment to more sustainable practices. However, as you may already know, the CDP scoring system used to be the same whether you were the smallest of small and medium enterprises or a huge corporate giant. Inevitably, the CDP realised that a multi-national manufacturing business – with complex supply chains and executives in the air 24/7 – operates in a very different way to, say, a modest UK-based marketing agency like Torpedo. That’s why this year, things have been managed differently, and for SMEs, B means best.
Torpedo may be a small business with a small CO2 impact – but there’s no harm in us thinking big when it comes to our carbon footprint. We’re always on the lookout for areas to improve, and while we can only help in minor, more subtle ways, in the words of one of those FTSE corporates, ‘every little helps.’ Post-COVID, we’ve moved mainly to remote working, and kept our company flights lower than pre-2020 levels, so moving in this direction has had a positive impact. Electricity-wise we moved to a green energy supplier a few years ago – another conscious decision to reduce our GHG emissions.
Going forward, the data disclosed this year through CDP’s SME questionnaire will be, in their words, “Used to develop and deploy a meaningful methodology for an SME A score for 2025 disclosure”. So we won’t be taking our foot off the greenhouse gas reduction pedal anytime soon.
Obviously, we understand the reason that clients like you come to a company like us is for a great go-to-market strategy, to reach a new audience, or simply for our marketing know-how. You wouldn’t stake the success of your brand on whether your agency had a separate bin for crisp packets and energy-saving, motion-activated light bulbs in the loos. (Though, BTW, we do.)
But it’s good to know that while you’re putting the maximum effort into reaching your own sustainability goals, one of your key partner companies is on the journey with you.
And that when it comes to reducing carbon footprints, we know the (CDP) score.
